It has been a couple of days since getting back from 7 nights with my family at Disney World. The experience was great, but I really feel like I need another vacation just to recover from my Disneylag.
“When leaving the happiest place on earth you might be the tiredest person on earth.”
I have been to Disney World at least 10 times since my parents took me the first time over 25 years ago. I’ve been there through the addition of Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios (aka MGM Studios), and more recently Fantasyland and the conversion of the Main Street Bakery to a Starbucks. Through all of the years and all of the changes one thing has always remained constant… attention to detail.
On this visit I was struck by some quotes from Walt Disney that were posted around areas that are currently under construction.
“When we consider a new project, we really study it – not just the surface idea, but everything about it.”
“When we go into that new project, we believe in it all the way. We have confidence in our ability to do it right.”
It is this attention to detail and confidence in their ability that creates the immersive Disney World experience whether you are staying at one of their resorts or blasting off to Mars on Mission Space. It is also what allowed the parks and resorts division of the Walt Disney Company to contribute $13 BILLION income stream with a 15% margin for fiscal year 2012.
Lately I had been thinking through my product development philosophy. Simply stated it is, “Do it right and do it well and the income will come”. It was great to see this lived out right in front of me in a company as big as the Walt Disney Company.
